Black Women’s music to support yesterday, today and tomorrow… continued

Fousheé

The ethereal otherworldly quality of Fousheé’s music comes not only from the ethereal, almost spiritual synth-heavy production, but also her emotive and stunningly beautiful voice. This is evident on her most recent project Relative Motion. The LA-based artist is a truly special talent, and I can’t wait to see what she does next!

duendita

The gentle, soulful touch of duendita’s voice is just so incredible. Her ability to create mesmeric, spiritual and earthly music is just so inspiring. Her 2018 album direct line to My Creator is an example of the gentle, ethereal quality she brings to her music. The Queens, New York-based artist evokes so much passion and love in her music that it’s impossible not to feel enamored by her angelic, spiritual quality.

Billzegypt

Billzegypt’s talents range from being an incredibly gifted singer, songwriter, producer, DJ and dancer. She has released some incredibly soulful, textured soul music with a captivating voice and energy that sounds beautifully melodic and truly wonderful. She sings so effortlessly and with ease about self, inner growth and the world around her. She’s an inspiring artist and someone I’ve been following since around 2013, so it’s amazing being able to see the growth since then!

Melanie Charles

Melanie Charles has been someone I have been trying to champion since the release of her excellent 2017 project The Girl with the Green Shoes. She’s a incredibly gifted singer, songwriter and flutist who grows and blossoms with each and every release. When she eventually, *hopefully* comes to London I’ll definitely need to catch her live, because according to certain people I trust, she is simply phenomenal.

Orion Sun

Philadelphia-based artist Orion Sun is a truly special talent. Her music sounds soulful and is beautifully personal and cathartic. I never got around to reviewing her new album Hold Space For Me for some reason, so here’s a quick one – it’s a wonderfully textured album with lush, synth-heavy compositions that are complemented by Orion Sun’s soothing and angelic vocals. So if that sounds appealing, make sure you check her music out!

Sudan Archives

Sudan Archives’ music feels intimate. Her 2019 album Athena was one of the highlights of that year. Her emotive vocals are complemented by her emphatic violin melodies and textured instrumentals. She continues to impress to this day, and I can’t wait to hear new music. Her presence feels timeless, and so do do her layered and soulful compositions. She will continue blossoming musically with every release, and it’ll just be a matter of time until the whole world falls in love with her.

Joy Postell

Baltimore-based singer, rapper and all-around incredible artist Joy Postell has been among my favourite artists in recent years. Her 2018 album Diaspora is nothing short of mesmeric, with gorgeous piano and guitar-led compositions that sound dynamic and eclectic. The energy of the album is infectious, and her vocal delivery is not only soulful, but it sounds mature and grown. She carries a lot of wisdom and insight within her music, and that’s what makes her so special. Check out her fantastic 2019 EP Back and Forth as well.
