Music: Melanie Charles – The Girl with the Green Shoes

I discovered  Brooklyn-born Haitian musician Melanie Charles a couple of months ago through the release of her single ‘Be On My Side,’ a gorgeous lo-fi ballad which appears on her first project titled The Girl with the Green Shoes. The misty, old vinyl quality to the record gave it a unique vibe which stayed with me since I discovered it originally.

Melanie Charles’ mixtape highlights her many qualities as a musician. Not only an incredibly gifted singer, but a talented producer, arranger and flautist. As D’Flower, she produced the entire album with the help of the legend Ohbliv on ‘Midnight’ and mejiwahn on ‘Be On My Side.’ ‘How Glad I Am’ is a highlight for me, with the wonderful bassline accompanying the soul sample and Melanie’s powerful vocal performance, singing about love, inspiration and artistry.

This is a joyous, experimental and soulful project. I see growth in artistry with Melanie, and if she remains focused on developing her sound, she will become a star in the near future.

Listen to and buy The Girl with the Green Shoes below via Bandcamp. It is released through the Oakland based community Hot Record Societe- please check out their other releases because they deserve a massive shoutout as well.
