a few thoughts: expo is likely to land high in my end-of-year albums list. a vast, experimental collage of post-punk and trip-hop-inspired grooves that are captivating from start to finish. they’ve now reimagined the album completely with striking electronic remixes from some talented artists, including members of yhwh nailgun, caroline and good sad happy bad and experimental music pioneers able noise and more eaze. from the ambient, hypnotic wa keys remix of “build a box and break it” to the jittery, dancefloor remix of “picto” by wing!, the album features dynamic, restless moments that capture an intensity utterly mesmerising from start to finish. curbside lambsear’s remix of “incomplete symphony” is a soothing, meandering moment, with ethereal synths and a groovy guitar tone that’s just hypnotic, while the intensity of the gloorp remix of “weights & measures” is disorienting and fun. the intense drumming on “this time i’m present”, remixed by fantasy of a broken heart makes it one of my favourites on the album. “i could just do it”, remixed by able noise and “showroom poetry” remixed by more eaze are both moody, atmospheric moments on the album, while the rhythmic dance-heavy energy of honesty’s remix of “expo” is incredible. the moody, meandering dancy energy of dot gain’s remix of “square root of none” is excellent, while cj calderwood’s spoken-word, sound collage of “a modern low” makes it an eclectic, disorienting moment on the album. expo, remixed reimagines expo beautifully, with eclectic, off-kilter compositions that range from moody and meditative to dance-heavy, trippy moments that represent the energy of the album perfectly.
