a few thoughts: over the last 30 years or so, dbridge has shaped and defined his legacy as a drum & bass icon. through collaborations with dj maldini as future forces inc. and bad company along with dj maldini, vegas and dj fresh, he’s released some of the most iconic and trailblazing music to come out of the scene. alongside his collaborations, he co-founded exit records, a home to his releases, including other talented artists including blackpocket (steve spacek), fixate, dolenz and calibre amongst others. i’ve been obsessed with his minimal approach to drum & bass, which separates itself from the club-centric and overtly maximalist drum & bass sound, focusing on an atmospheric and often hypnotic sound. this was exemplified effortlessly on his 2008 debut, the gemini principle.

the 13-track album is a 1 hour and 13-minute journey through intricate, fast-paced drumming, stunning synth-led melodies and incredibly infectious energy. the shortest track, excluding “desire line (interlude)” and “mana’s lament (outro)”, is 4:40, with most tracks between 6 and 8 minutes. dbridge takes his time building the intensity of his tracks, as on the soulful and ethereal standouts “creatures of habit” and “the question”. both of them feature infectious vocal chops and a dynamic, rhythmic groove that are just so mesmerising from start to finish. it’s the trance-like quality to his music that makes it so special to me, with the opener “seven year itch” starting with ambient soundscapes before bursting into life with heavy drum rhythms that are just so punchy. instra:mental features on the colourful “blush response” and calibre features on the electric “ponderosa”, another incredible moment on the album. the light and uplifting “mr. malcontent” is another beautiful moment, while “the question” feels like a gorgeous extension to the prior track. “pure elegance” breaks into this heavy, menacing energy, while the rumbling “the yearning” featuring some heavy drumming and a soulful vocal sample that is just incredible from start to finish. the menacing, dark and uneasy energy of “mourning dawn” is one of the most electric moments on the album, while the closer “mana’s lament (outro)” contrasts that heavy sound with a gentle, delicate and subtle synth melody that is enchanting and soothing.

the gemini principle is an incredible body of work that showcases dbridge versatility as a producer, creating moody, minimalist drum & bass rhythms that have helped shape the iconic sound of the electronic music scene within london and britain as a whole.
