a few thoughts: i love bands that sit within genres and recording practices that combine live instrumentation with digital and electronic soundscapes. this is exaclty what london-based quintet ulrika spacek have done on their album expo, a masterful 11-track album that meanders between incredible guitar-led compositions and electronic effects that create this immersive soundboard for lead vocalist rhys edwards to craft some emphatic choruses and cathartic moments. from the restless and angsty energy of “picto” to the melodic ballad of “incomplete symphony”, the album combines playful melodies with energetic and striking guitar-led compositions that are both catchy and groovy, combining their intricate compositions with spaceous and atmospheric moments. “i could just do it” and “build a box and break it” are two of my favourites on the album, with incredible drumming and melodies that just hit. the latter track has an emphatic chorus, while the former has incredible drumming akin to that 90s trip hop sound we all love. their ability to combine live drumming and instrumentation with programmed beats is second to none. the riveting and restless energy of “this time i’m present” is infectious, while the light and colourful “showroom poetry” is another beautiful and reflective moment on the album. moments like “weights & measures” are abrasive and overwhelming in energy, while the smooth and dreamy “a modern low” makes for a hypnotic listen, as it flows beautifully into the sweet and reflective closer. expo is a terrific album with colourful compositions that combine riveting guitar leads with electronic moments that make for a dynamic and interesting listen. expo, remixed, their 10-track remix project is set to come out on the 31st july and features reworks from members of yhwh nailgun, caroline and good sad happy bad amongst others. go check that when it comes out!
