Jim Legxacy’s homeless n***a pop music is an incredible musical accomplishment, with futuristic and textured production that complements the purity in his voice and artistry

I have been hearing of Jim Legxacy for a little while now, but never really got into the London rapper, singer and producer’s music until now. homeless n***a pop music is his new project, a collection of 12 tracks, all self-produced, and all incredibly beautiful, as his revealing and vulnerable side shines through. He’s had his struggles of course, and as the title suggests, he was homeless for a period of time, finding it really difficult to cope with life. Creating this project around that period in his life, I really feel the passion and pure dedication to his craft. It’s one of the surprises thus far of the year personally, and I’m so excited to catch up with his previous releases, as well as hear what he has coming next, because he is definitely still at the start of his musical journey.

Firstly, off top, the production is incredible. The sampling, the sonic textures and complex arrangements make for such an exciting listen. For some reason, and maybe because I’ve been hearing a lot of his music, but there’s something about it that reminds me of Jai Paul’s music. Not necessarily stylistically, though there are some similarities, but the way he’s able to collage a myriad of sounds in one, producing music that is dynamic and always in motion. The opener “dj” already sets the tone for the mixtape, as he brands it. The fast-paced drill-influenced beat, the gentle guitar leads and his emotive vocals are just incredible. The afrobeat influence is also heavy throughout the album. The guitar grooves on “candy reign (!)”, the vocals, and the chorus of voices that come in at the end are incredible. The beat is crazy, and Jim Legxacy’s voice is smooth and beautiful as ever here. “amnesia111” is another fantastic one, with a more emphatic beat, captivating and ethereal synths and incredibly lush vocals. “eye tell (!)” is a highlight on the mixtape, with an emphatic beat, vulnerable lyricism and a beautiful melody that is just incredible. “block hug” is another excellent record, with melodic guitar leads, vulnerable lyrics about love and heartbreak, and expectations that come with growing up in the hood. It then breaks into this darker, bass-heavy beat and Jim Legxacy rapping his ass off about harsh truths about his life and environment he grew up in. “ur marges crib” has this pop vocal sample that complements the gentle beat, and what sounds like a Giggs sample being interpolated within the beat, as Jim’s incredible vocals make this such an incredibly beautiful and potent track. The title track is another highlight, with an incredible verse that sees Jim Legxacy rap about his own trials and tribulations growing up in Lewisham, South London. It’s a truly incredible track. “hit it light it twist it” is a great closer to the mixtape, with a fast-paced, driving beat and Jim’s incredible vocals stealing the show once more.

Jim Legxacy’s homeless n***a pop music is an incredible musical accomplishment, with futuristic and textured production that complements the purity in his voice and artistry. It’s a stellar and memorable body of work that should be in conversation for one of the best projects to come out of the UK this year. Go listen and support!
