Having covered LA emcee and producer YUNGMORPHEUS for a good few years now, releasing tapes independently, it’s amazing and inspiring seeing him release what is arguably his most complete album to date. From Whence It Came feels like summer, a colourful, soulful and incredibly warm body of work, with varied production from the likes of Ohbliv, Graymatter, Shungu, August Fanon, DMH and YUNGMORPHEUS himself among others. The fact that he’s got such an array of producers working on his album, and it sounding as cohesive and well sequenced as it is, already makes it one of his most impressive accomplishments to date, and we haven’t even gotten to his rapping yet.
“Where It Goes” featuring Jimetta Rose and produced by Dirty Art Club has this vintage soul sound, with YUNGMORPHEUS’ nonchalant and deadpan flow sounding menacing, rapping with confidence about where he came from and his vision for the future. His humor comes through on this track and the album as a whole, with witty bars being sprinkled throughout his introspective lyrics about his own life experiences. “Cassava Bread” featuring Fly Anakin and produced by Graymatter is an early highlight for me, with an incredibly intricate and soulful beat, with both emcees rapping effortlessly, flexing their wordplay and playful food references as well. “What You Won’t Do” featuring the legend MED and produced by Shungu is another incredible track, with both emcees flexing their talents on the mic. Lines like “took a stroll with covered mouths so they can read the lips” are dope and showcase YUNGMORPHEUS’ talents as a writer, creating vivid images and imagery through his rhymes. The hazy, self-produced “Heavy Bags” is another great track with a plethora of weed references sprinkled throughout. The JUNIE. produced “Layman’s Terms” is another incredible track, with a lush soul sample and an incredibly poignant verse, where YUNGMORPHEUS proclaims that he used to “treat the verse like a dissertation”, learning that simplifying shit is the way to go, and rapping in layman’s terms to him is what makes his music so relatable and interesting. “Fiya Haffi Bun” featuring lojii and produced by August Fanon is a moodier track, as expected, with both emcees killing it with incredible verses that touch on the darker side of their psyche. “Shattered Glass” is exceptional as well, while the DMH-produced “Faded Memories” closes the album out triumphantly, with lines like “trying to reach the truest true within each line” capturing an inspired tone and energy that reflects the positive influence he brings on the culture and the environment around him.
From Whence It Came is YUNGMORPHEUS’ most complete work to date, a special album that captures his versatility both as a producer and his talents as an emcee. Everyone involved in crafting the soundscapes on this album did their thing, and it’s really inspiring seeing an artist grow from an underground talent to one of the most exciting new artists making music today. Go support! Released via Lex Records.
