19 year old London-based singer/poet and all-around talented artist Arlo Parks comes through with a brand new EP titled Sophie. It’s an introspective, soulful and upbeat project with colourful R&B inspired soundscapes that are perfect for her pure and honest poetry.
The project starts off with the beautiful “Second Guessing,” a synth-heavy ethereal opener, with a keys and guitar leads that adds a warm, blissful texture to the track. The basslines on “George” are incredibly groovy, and the muddy, murky guitar leads sound almost psychedelic, as she sings about the complexities of love. At her age, it’s amazing to me how pure and detailed her descriptions are, with incredible imagery painting a perfect picture of her introspective mind. The lead single “Sophie” is a gorgeous, guitar and bass-driven track that exudes soul. “Angel’s Song” is another smooth, soothing and beautiful track. With guitar leads and no drums, the meditative energy of this track is a good change of pace. “You want to jump off the roof, but fuck all of you, you’re my angel, fuck I love you,” she sings with a touch of pure honesty. “Paperbacks” closes the project off beautifully with a dynamic, rhythmic yet dreamy track, as again she sings about mental health and love in an honest and wonderfully pure way. Overall, with Sophie, Arlo Parks comes through with an angelic, meditative new project that perfectly captures her aura and creative ability.
