Los Angeles-based producer Stro Elliot has come through with a brand new EP titled Moods. The talented musician has been one of the most exciting producers on the scene, producing for the likes of Phonte and working with the likes of Pete Rock and The Roots. This project showcases his talents fully as he is able to bring incredible soul samples and chops, backed with incredible drumming as well.
“The Egyptian Way” starts with a frantic and gritty groove, with intense drumming and an electronic groove. There are synths and keys sprinkled throughout the melody as the beat just hits hard. “FTL” brings soulful and bluesy sasmples, with a quirky melody and those drums… wow. His drums are just impeccable. “Gifted” is one of my favourites on the album, with a chopped soul sample, hard-hitting drums and a subtle but groovy bassline that dominates the tone and rhythm of the track. “1000000” samples Lil Wayne’s “A Milli” with a heavy electronic, 8-bit and DIBIA$E inspired beat, whereas “Kamaal Coltrane” is a groovy, jazzy and moody track. “Hey Slim” ends the album off with a soulful and infectiously groovy track, with an incredible sample and beautiful keys that complement the beat and basslines. Overall, Stro Elliot impresses immensely with this new release, creating a groovy, infectious and catchy project I’m bound to play much more of in the foreseeable future.
