Released back in September, New York based electronic producer Sporting Life came through with Black Diamond EP, an experimental electronic release, with hip-hop and footwork influences.
Featuring Deem Spencer, Taso, MIKE, Wiki and Nick Hakim, Sporting Life is really able to experiment with different tones and moods. On “Black Diamond” featuring Deem Spencer, the soul sample at the starts turns into this moody, ethereal and synth-heavy beat with a soulful delivery from the talented singer and rapper. “La Sportiva” with Taso is a dynamic, footwork-inspired composition, with intricate drum compositions and R&B samples that are looped throughout. The beat on this track is dynamic, really bringing dance-heavy vibes. “Crux” featuring MIKE and Wiki is another soulful and spacey track, with introspective and engaging lyricism from both rappers. “Approach” with Nick Hakim is a spaced-out, lo-fi gem, with slow-paced synths and an almost suffocating vocal performance from the guest feature. The spoken vocal samples add texture to the release, but Nick really sounds like he’s drowning over the hypnotic production. Overall, this is an excellent release with an eclectic and beautiful sound.
