New York emcees Smoke Dza & Benny The Butcher come through with a brand new EP titled Statue of Limitations produced by the legend Pete Rock. Both emcees have released some stellar projects over the last couple of years, with Benny in particular being one of the revelations in recent years with Tana Talk 3 (2018) and The Plugs I Met (2019) being some of the hardest-hitting hip-hop releases in a while.
The mafioso, drug-filled lyricism throughout this project is intricate, with clever wordplay and wild, vivid lyricism throughout. “By Any Means” starts the album off with chimes and a hard-hitting beat that brings this heavy tone. The sort of back and forth between both rappers is incredible, and the dusty tone of the track is what makes it such a great track. “Bullets” features Conway, and is an incredible track with intricate lyricism, especially Conway, who never fails to disappoint on a verse. Styles P features on “Smoked and Butchered,” containing a soul sample and synth-heavy beat from the legendary producer. “7:30” features Westside Gunn and have some incredibly vivid imagery and lyricism. “Drug Rap” and “Toast” end the album with a bang, with the latter track having this warped sample throughout that makes it a somewhat devilish track. It’s a fantastic track with horns, samples and mafioso, aggressive rap from some of the best rappers out at the moment.
