Rapper Big Kahuna OG and producer Graymatter come through with a brand new collaborative album STRAINMAN CHRONICLES. As members of Richmond, Virginia collective Mutant Academy, their work is always anticipated, and as per usual, with incredible production and lyricism, this project is incredible.
From the opening track “Draco Slide (Fall Back Pt.3)” to the closer “Lord’s Work,” the album is non-stop heat, with introspective lyricism from Big Kahuna OG and soulful but hard-hitting boom-bap production from the Graymatter. From the gorgeous, key-heavy “Thug Williams” to the soulful and personal “R.I.P Moe Greene,” the album showcases the extent of their talents to the fullest. “Strain Seminar” features the unmistakable Fly Anakin, who brings impeccable wordplay and flow. “Hot Boy Summer” features an incredible soul sample being looped over a smooth beat, and Big Kahuna OG flowing effortlessly throughout. It’s unfair how good these collaborations are. Mutant Academy have released nothing but classics and there might be another one in STRAINMAN CHRONICLES. There’s still a lot to digest from this release, but just from the production and intricate lyricism and flow alone, this album is worth the listen and support.
