Los Angeles based rapper YUNGMORPHEUS and Tokyo-based producer Fumitake Tamura have released a new collaborative album titled Mazal. After meeting briefly at a 2017 Low End Theory show in LA, the two talented musicians were sharing music with each other. The result is a 10 track album that feels dark and somewhat unsettling, which is due to YUNGMORPHEUS’ twisted and vivid lyricism and Fumitake Tamura’s eclectic sonic arrangements.
The opening track “Blunted” features a trap-influenced beat with weird electronic effects that sound eerie, giving YUNGMORPHEUS the opportunity to flow and deliver a menacing verse. “Last Days // Ashtrays” continues that eerie, unsettling and off-kilter tone. Both the instrumental and the verse from the talented rapper is almost hellish in its tone and delivery. “Combustion” features some angelic keys that add an ethereal tone to the track, while “Top Notch” and “Watch Me” feature some soulful sampled moments. The eclecticism and diversity of this release is fantastic and makes for a genuinely interesting and engaging listen. The smooth and soulful tone on “General Barca” makes it my favourite track on the album. Overall, this is an engaging and memorable release, one I will be playing again and again for the rest of the year.
