Melbourne, Australia band Big Yawn have released a short, two-track EP titled Skinrat/Thomas. The is my first introduction to the experimental, electronic band, and these two tracks absolutely blew me away.
“Skinrat” kicks of with jittery drumming that bring infectious energy, with swirling synths being complemented with intense, intricate percussion that bring such infectious, engaging energy. It’s quite a dynamic listen, and one I can’t help but replaying again and again. The slight electronic effects and vocal samples throughout also add texture. The off-kilter tone and energy of “Thomas” is also great, with an eerie tone brought by the synth leads and industrial sound effects throughout this drum-heavy piece. The bassline throughout the track is groovy and incredibly funky as well. Overall these two tracks are a great introduction to the group’s incredible chemistry, bringing a plethora of different influences, executed excellently.
