Richmond, Virginia hip-hop legend Koncept Jack$on comes through with a brand new release titled Newport 1000s. He never disappoints, with raw, hard-hitting tracks that bring such visceral energy and great confidence.
“Mans in Town” starts this album off with an eclectic soulful beat produced by Tropes, and then launches into “Negative Feedback Loop,” a hard-hitting track with soulful synths and keys, and an incredible thumping beat, produced by Olasegun. The instrumentation throughout is just what I wanted and expected from a Koncept Jack$on album – raw, dirty and hard-hitting. The thumping energy of the soundscape throughout provides an engaging listen, but it’s also Koncept Jack$on’s incredible flow and wordplay throughout that makes it a great listen. I can’t even keep up most of the time, having to re-listen to the lyrics again and again to pick out some of the gems. But in general, the production absolutely slaps in every single way, with soulful, boom-bap production that I just love. “Butterknife-Cut Tension” is an example of this, with a soul sample enveloped within a smooth bassline, synths and a thumping beat. Lyrically, its dense with introspective bars about street life and other personal topics. I shall be listening to this again and again, because it really is a terrific project.
