I remember back in late 2013 having a conversation about music, with him insisting that “Mndsgn is gonna be a legend.” This was back when he released his critically acclaimed Fresh Selects debut Breatharian, a brilliant body of work I still celebrate to this day. Having signed to Stones Throw Records in 2014, he released the terrific Yawn Zen that year and his funk odyssey Body Wash in 2016. He is back again this year with a brand new album Snaxx, a smooth and synth-heavy album that brings soulful compositions and a few stellar features.
Tracks like “Browneez” and “Deviled Eggs” bring ethereal tones with synths and keys being sprinkled throughout the record, with funky, thick basslines that give the tracks an undeniable groove. The harder-hitting energy of “Sundim,” which is brought by the thumping beat is another highlight, while “Cashoos” features a smooth, soulful sample with stellar keys and strings which bring the aura of the track to life. It’s a truly memorable track for its composition. “Chips” features the man Jon Bap with his soothing and warm vocals, while “Snaxx w U” features talented singer Asal Hazel with a gorgeous vocal performance and guitar leads that are just breathtakingly beautiful. Count on Pink Siifu to come through with the killer, introspective verse though. “Ggardenn” is a beautiful and reflective closer to this great album, with its keys and subtle synths that float throughout the track. Mndsgn also shows his vocal talents near the end. Again, an absolutely breathtaking listen. Soulful, funky, ethereal and beautiful.
