Lagos born, Rome raised and London based singer, producer, rapper Shunaji comes through with a brand new project titled Blue Melon. A beautiful, soulful and captivating release blending a myriad of genres including boom-bap hip-hop production, neo-soul rhythms as well as tribal grooves which bring soul and a whole lot of funk.
The project is produced almost entirely by the talented artist, with help from Sascha Create (Brother’s Testament) on drums and Marla Mbemba (Yazmin Lacey) on bass. “Nighthawks” features gorgeous vocals (her first ever vocal appearance, which is kinda crazy) and some infectious grooves, with basslines and keys throughout that have the same aura and soul as groups such as A Tribe Called Quest. The “Not Lookin'” features more eerie tones, with a hard-hitting bassline and a devilish flow from Shunaji. Tracks like “Afrodites” feature vocals from Emiko and a more angelic vibe through harp and key notes sprinkled throughout. Lyrically she speaks on social attitudes, introspective thoughts about her identity and place in society as a whole. “Curtains,” is the highlight to me, with an incredible sample and groovy beat being the soundscape for Shunaji to flow effortlessly throughout, bringing wisdom and introspection to the music.
Blue Melon is an inspiring, vibrant project which highlights Shunaji as a talent to watch in 2019 and beyond. I look forward to following her growth and seeing what she has in store for us next. Listen to her brand new album/EP Blue Melon below via Bandcamp and don’t forget to support!
