Richmond, Virginia musician Ohbliv has been one of the most prolific and consistent producers of the last decade. Having reviewed a plethora of his projects in the past (check Lewse Joints VI, Retrospective and Soulphonic among others), I’m always eager to hear from the talented artist. Give Thanks is his newest project, a woozy, eclectic project full of soulful beats and funky grooves throughout.
He produced most of the album with a SP-4O4, PT01 turntable, and digi-recorder. While Ohbliv does use an MPC 2000 here and then, the 404-SX is his main weapon of choice. Again, the beats are smooth, soothing and incredibly funky in nature, with an emphasis on hard-hitting beats with basslines and slick chops and samples. Records like “Everlasting” and “Overcast” are examples of this type of energy, whilst “Romantic Black Comedie” stands out to me for it’s hard-hitting beat and relentless energy that just pulsates throughout. Influenced by the likes of Dilla and Madlib, what I have admired about Ohbliv is his ability to craft and own his own sound whilst being a great ambassador for the beat scene today.
Major love to Ohbliv for releasing a stellar album with Give Thanks, and I can only be excited about the music he continues to drop. Listen to Give Thanks below via Bandcamp and make sure you support! Released via Fat Beats Records.
