I have been paying attention to Leeds based musician Captain Over since his excellent 2018 EP No One Really Flies. His energetic, synth and glitch heavy production is something I was drawn to immediately, so I was naturally intrigued to hear what kind of music he was producing this time around. With his new project, Better EP, he continues impressing with dub-inspired tunes that keep energy levels high and my speakers vibrating.
With 4 tracks, the talented producer has been able to create a dense sound full of glitches, hard-hitting dub rhythms and pulsating beats, ones which just keep punching through. Manga Saint Hilare features on two of the tracks, “Better With,” and “When You’re Ready.” He comes through with stellar, introspective verses that see him rhyming on smoother soundscapes full of ethereal synths and subtle drums. “Social Assassin” and “Dope” to me sound more experimental and daring in their production, with higher glitch levels and electronic effects that add to the heat and energy created by the bass-heavy production. “Social Assassin” in particular is a favourite of mine in the way that the record builds and builds as it goes on, bringing in new elements with enrich the track throughout.
Overall, this is an excellent project deserving of all its praise, and I look forward to Captain Over challenging us with a full-length project in the future. Listen to Better EP below via Bandcamp, and make sure you support! Released via XVI Records.
