Artist and illustrator Gangster Doodles brings some of the most incredible artists within the hip-hop and beat scene on this new compilation tape titled Gangster Music Vol. 1. Doodles had the idea for a compilation about two years ago. After being hyped after partnering with All City for Knxwledge’s Wraptaypes project back in 2015, they initially set out to put together a new EP but as the tracks kept coming in it exploded into the sprawling double LP of smooth soulful cuts and absolute bangers. This is what Doodles set out to do with this compilation.
Featuring the likes of Jeremiah Jae, Father, Jonwayne, Budgie, LoVibe, Mndsgn, Kaytranada, Quelle Chris, Onra and Madlib & Oh No among others, this tape is diverse in sounds, from hard-hitting beats to soulful and sample-heavy cuts that keep an upbeat and funky atmosphere that makes for an engaging listen. That Budgie beat on “On My Shit” featuring TDE affiliate Traffic is incredibly produced, with swirling synths and a funky bassline that gives the track an equally soulful and aggressive tone, which is accompanied by Traffic’s honest, dominant delivery. Dream Panther bring a more rock-infused energy on “KCRW,” which combines guitars with trap-flavoured beats. Kojaque, Kean Kavanagh and M Finnegan bring the soulful R&B to “Whitney,” and JayAllDay brings a darker sound to the tape with his South Korean raps.
This is an excellent compilation album that features some of my all-time favourite musicians, and I can’t express my gratitude for what Gangster Doodles does for the culture enough. Listen to Gangster Music Vol. 1 below via Bandcamp, and don’t forget to support!
