KOKOROKO the young, London based Afrobeat 8-Piece band led by trumpeter Sheila Maurice-Grey, have released their highly anticipated debut EP titled KOKOROKO. It is a stunning body of work which reflects their incredible chemistry and raw passion and energy that make them one of the most exciting bands to come out of the London jazz scene in years.
This self-titled 4-track project features the now-viral track “Abusey Junction,” which still hits hard the same way it did when released on Brownswood’s We Out Here release. The second single “Uman” features some heavy rhythmic melodies that bring so much energy and raw, tribal power. “Adwa” brings dynamic drumming as well as gorgeous saxophone and trumpet melodies that bring the dynamic energy we have come to love from the talented group. “Ti-de” is a slower-paced track which brings Middle Eastern influences through the incredible guitar leads that bring character and a grogeous, heart-melting melody that really is beautiful in every single way. I can’t pick a favourite off this record, all the tracks are just incredible. I’m super proud of all of them for really coming into their own on this record.
