iunnowho is a Philadelphia based musician signed to one of my favourite labels at the moment, Extra Lovely Records. This is my first introduction to the talented artist, and his newest project 555 is quite an eclectic and insightful first listen. It experiments heavily with warped beats, odd samples and creative vocal snippets that provide both character and energy to the psychedelic tone of the album.
“As I See My Last,” for examples samples MF DOOM and Busta Rhymes in between a bass-heavy beat and harp-like samples that again bring out a psychedelic, off-kilter vibe that I mess with heavily. The high-energy of “Karma” featuring Josh Hey is manic with its twisted electronic samples and loops as well as the experimental groove that drives the track forward. The title track “555” brings tribal grooves, with heavy drumming and a pulsating beat that is heavy and menacing in its tone. The vocal samples are quirky and give us a history lesson of tracks and albums that have shaped hip-hop culture. From Madvillain to Desiigner, the eclectic sampling is what gives this album such immense personality and energy. I feel like this is a project I will be replaying all year.
