One of the artists to watch in 2019, London based rapper and producer Louis VI comes through with his first single of the year titled “Station Wagon” featuring Dozer Carter. This is his first release since his phenomenal 2018 album SUGAR LIKE SALT, and it’s safe to say that it’s an absolute banger.
More trap influenced than his previous releases, this track is filled with 808s and a hard-hitting, aggressive beat that gives Louis VI and Dozer Carter the opportunity to rap about the irony of identity in Hip Hop, a satirical pisstake on ‘flexing’, boasting about pulling up in a beat up “Station Wagon.” It’s an interesting change of pace for Louis VI, sonically. What I’ve always loved about Louis’ music is his ability to incorporate live instrumentation, something that isn’t prioritised on this track. As the song progresses however, the soundscape changes, and brings sweet guitar melodies, synths and and a more dream-like atmosphere, with Louis singing beautifully over the lush production, providing a killer melody that to me is the heart and soul of the song. I’d much rather him go over this kind of production than the trap-inspired sound, but I completely respect this direction as well as it shows his willingness to experiment with new sounds.
