a few thoughts: there was a month or two last year where i rinsed truck violence’s debut album violence, which came out in mid-2024. there was something about the energy they brought and the compositions and structure of their songs that i absolutely loved. the cathartic, get the fuck outta my face type energy was exactly what i needed at the time, and i still play that album heavily today. they are back with their sophomore album titled the weathervane is my body, and this time, they’ve released it via my favourite experimental metal label the flenser. over 9-tracks, they sound a gutteral and abrasive as ever before, with thunderous guitar-led compositions, antsy drumming and rumbling basslines that evoke feelings of rage but also provide a feeling of release. oh, and the vocals are just incredible. from the incredible energy of the opener “my dog would fuck the air” to the melodic yet fierce closer “kindly, wash yourself”, the album is full of energetic and angry moments, but in usual truck violence fashion, they contain elements of light canadian folk, contrasting the harsh energy of their sound. “jaundiced and reaching for a mother” is another highlight on the album, with a fast-paced energy and harsh vocals screaming “i was born jaundiced”. lyrically the album is pretty cynical and at times super odd and poetic, but i dig it. “compelled by christy” is another fiery moment, while “house caught fire” is a drumless, soft, folk rock tune that is just beautiful. “new jesus” resumes the heavy and abrasive sound, as the bleak lyrics make this quite a depressing listen, but with emphatic guitar melodies that hit so hard. “your name, it’s walking” is one of my highlights, with a fiery guitar-led composition that includes heavy drumming, as it transitions towards a folkier sound, with a somber and reflective energy that brings their two contrasting energies together emphatically and triumphantly. “stomach as a tower and the globules descending” (what a name) is another heady and intense moment, while “gerard, be quiet” brings back the light, folk energy, with a sweet composition that leads nicely into the mellow and melodic closer “kindly, wash yourself”. there’s so much to admire about truck violence and this album. the weathervane is my body is a cathartic and poignant body of work, with abrasive compositions and fascinating lyricism that at times borders on absurd.
