a few thoughts: to make an 11-minute album sound like a full body of work is impressive to say the least. one of the most interesting bands making music today, yhwh nailgun continue to push boundaries. the group consists of zach borzone on vocals, sam pickard on drums, saguiv rosenstock on guitar, and jack tobias on synths. their abrasive and percussion-heavy sound is ever-present on this album, with a tense and chaotic energy that bursts into life on the disorienting, synth-heavy opener “ghost of love”. the drumming on “stillness blues” is intense, with rumbling guitar leads and basslines that are just incredible from start to finish. the subdued and haunting synth leads of “innocent sigh” make this a somewhat eerie listen, while “hips on a wheel” is another disorienting and unsettling moment on the album. zach borzone’s vocals pierce through the abrasive and heavy soundscapes throughout the album. “ballerina” is the highlight on the album for me, there’s something truly hypnotic about the synth melodies and off-kilter drumming. the colourful “give blood” is another fantastic moment, while the 35-second title track is a vibrant moment on the project, despite it cutting off way too abruptly. “sewer tree” and “burns” are two more energetic moments on the album, while the percussion-heavy “to the devil” closes the album out with animated synth melodies and frantic energy. over 10 tracks and 11 minutes, yhwh nailgun continue pushing the boundaries of what post-punk and post-rock can sound like, with energetic and compositionally intricate and complex pieces that showcase why they are one of the most exciting artists working today. please go listen to 45 pounds if you haven’t yet.
