a few thoughts: over the years, i’ve developed a fascination for dj plead’s music. the australian-lebanese producer has been making some of the most thrilling electronic music today, incorporating traditional and contemporary sounds from the swana region into his bass-heavy electronic compositions. relentless trills, his debut album released back in 2021, introduced us to an artist willing to explore his lebanese roots with confidence, and the results were spectacular. thumping grooves, a slow-paced techno sound that combined incredible arab instrumentation with phenomenal beats. five years later, he returns with please, his sophomore release, and it’s his most defined and complete project to date. the slow-paced and immersive quality of the first two tracks “return to deuce” and “stucco” set the tone for the album perfectly. the ney-led melodies and intricate beat arrangements on the latter track especially make for an emotive listen. “seven eight, too late” is a short but punchy moment on the album, while the atmospheric quality of “pa700”, with its meandering and colourful string melodies, is such a beautiful and emotive moment on the album. it flows perfectly into “sush”, a bass-heavy, percussive piece that is ethereal yet punchy. the heavenly synths on “unforced error” make it an emotive cut on the album, while the menacing, dub-infused “ride tv” is a lively moment on the album, with its deep bass-led grooves that give the track an infectious, entrancing quality. similarly, the synth-led “open era” is another atmospheric track with its immersive synth compositions. “right on-time” is this wonderous, psychedelic track that is amongst the standouts for me. the gorgeous, string-led and drumless “traffic” closes the album out in a reflective and calming tone and feels like a tribute to the ancestors before him that have shaped his musical dna. please is a truly stunning body of work, capturing dj plead’s talents as a producer effortlessly. he’s truly one of the most exciting electronic producers working today.
