DC producer / emcee Oddisee has released his first album in 6 years titled To What End. He’s been one of the most consistent hip-hop artists making music since he released his debut 101 back in 2008. His production over the years has been lively and full of heavy, hard-hitting beats and seamless flows and raps that, combined together, make for some of the most soulful and reflective hip-hop music you’ll hear.
To What End is no different, as he meanders through his animated production, talking about love and self-growth through the parameters of his own experiences. His personal body of work showcases his skills as a storyteller, through emotive lyricism that hit hard throughout. “Many Hats” is one of my favourites on the album, with a groovy, bass-driven track that complements his lyrics perfectly. The smooth and soulful “More to Go” featuring C.S. Armstrong is another highlight, as the funky beat is complemented by introspective and uplifting verses, and an excellent vocal feature that meanders through the beat and synth leads perfectly. “Work To Do” featuring Bilal is another highlight, with its soulful vocals and reflective words, while “Hard to Tell” is another soothing moment on the album, capturing the essence and purity of his music and artistry.
Oddisee released an excellent body of work reflecting his current state of mind, with reflective and introspective lyrics that match his soulful and thumping beats. The features all do their thing, and the colourful and animated production make this a captivating listen.
