The beatmaking legend dakim has come through with a release titled youdecide. Produced back in 2010, this tape was set in motion by the Honorable Ras G, and this album is dedicated to him.
Throughout the 14 tracks, dakim is able to create an eclectic soundscape full of intricate beat compositions, textured with electronic synths and effects as well as basslines and sampled moments. Whether its the heavy and unassuming “youstillstand” to the soulful and crazy “rap,” this album is full of incredible sounds that perfectly capture the aura and the groove of the LA beat scene. There’s so much incredible music packed within these tracks. The animated “moresa” brings chopped samples and crazy beat arrangements, while “hoverbeat” is a soothing, mellow instrumental that has ethereal moments throughout it. “gratis” closes the album out with a suffocating, spacey beat that captures all of his musical prowess in one beautiful track. Overall, dakim’s youdecide is a wonderful body of work, perfectly capturing his legacy as one of the most forward thinking producers of his generation. I’m sure Ras G would be proud, and massive, massive love to the intergalactic beat wizard.
