DJ Muggs has had a very busy year in terms of releases. He’s collaborated with Mach-Hommy and two occasions as well as releasing a collaborative project Crimeapple. He is back with a new project alongside one of hip-hop’s hardest working rappers, Tha God Fahim titled Dump Assassins.
As usual, DJ Muggs’ production is dark, soulful and incredibly textured, as he provides a perfect soundscape for Tha God Fahim to spit his truth. The album starts off with “Dump Assassination,” which features the legendary Vinnie Paz. It’s a menacing track, bringing both emcee’s skills to the table with metaphor-heavy track with intricate bars and a whole lot of energy. The synth leads on “The Silent Samurai” is eerie, and Tha God Fahim comes through with a crazy verse. “Black Talons” and “Tales from the Firehouse” both feature Your Old Droog and Mach-Hommy, who as usual deliver menacing and intricate raps that perfectly capture the essence and sound of this album. The second half of “Gauntlet” features a monologue about Islam and the Quran, which makes for an educational moment on the album. Throughout, Tha God Fahim raps about his own introspective thoughts and experiences, as well as making historical references which makes it a dense and interesting listen. There’s a lot to unpack on this album, but overall DJ Muggs is able to perfectly capture Tha God Fahim’s introspection and frankly, genius on these 10 tracks. Dump Assassins is a great album and one I look forward to digesting.
