Dallas-based musician and Dolfin Records bossman Ben Hixon has come through with a brand new album titled Dearly Loved. The talented musician has released some stellar projects in the past, namely last year’s Living Quarters, so it goes without saying that I was looking forward to this project.
His ability to bring his beats and compositions to live with soulful samples and energetic production throughout his music is really admirable. The 8 minute thriller “Undone” is an excellent opener to the album, with a driving beat, ethereal synths throughout and a groovy, infectious rhythm. These moments can be found throughout the project, in more percussion-heavy and tribal tracks such as “Flutes,” or more footwork inspired compositions such as on “Foe.” Throughout, Ben Hixon is able to craft a sonic landscape that is both moody, reflective and rhythmic. “Stash” is fantastic with its sampled loop and hard-hitting beat, while “Chekrz” closes the album out with a synth-heavy composition that features a driving, infectious beat. Overall Dearly Loved represents growth from a musician who is always diversifying his sound and taking his music to new sonic territories. I’m inspired by it, and look forward to anything Ben Hixon is planning on releasing in the foreseeable future.
