London-based artist Hak Baker comes through with a brand new Mixtape titled Babylon. The gorgeous melodies throughout this project are complemented by raw and honest lyricism from the talented musician, who is introspective and honest throughout this project, pushing himself musically as well to great results.
The project starts off with “Big House” with infectious guitar-driven melodies and a thumping melody that perfectly captures and sets the tone for the whole album. “Lad” is similarly darker in tone, with dominant basslines and guitar plucks throughout that add texture and life to the record. “Mush” has infectious Afrobeat grooves throughout, with honest lyricism by the talented young producer. His sung raps throughout are beautiful and soulful throughout the whole project. The jazz-inspired vibe on tracks like “Venezuelan Riddim” are wonderful, with an upbeat and positive vibe. “PC Plod” and “Fuck You” have heavier, Punk-like qualities to them, with more aggressive guitar leads and a shouty delivery from Hakeem Baker. “Embargo” brings a more uplifting tone to the Mixtape, with horns and synths throughout that sound more ethereal and grandiose than the rest of the tracks on here. Overall, Hak Baker’s Babylon is an eclectic and fascinating release, full of some honest lyricism and intricate production.
