Led by Cykada trumpeter Axel Kaner-Lidstrom, UK jazz group Levitation Orchestra have completely broken all doors down on their new album Inexpressible Infinity. The band’s chemistry and ability to create almost hellish compositions through incredible percussion rhythms and drumming is something I haven’t heard much of this year, and they’ve done it to perfection.
The mind-bending opener “Odyssey,” with its percussive grooves and crazy horn sections, is a phenomenal way to kick off this album. “Mystical Yang” is a 10-minute thriller with a moody and bass-heavy soundscape that is complemented by riveting horn compositions and subtle guitar leads that give extra texture and melody to the track. The cacophonous interlude “MF One” features jumpy vocals and tremendous energy throughout, while “Clairevoyance” is a mystical, beautifully composed track with stunning vocals and a harp-led melody that sounds utterly mesmerizing. The warped out “A Small Truth” is a fantastic build up to “Twin Serpents,” an upbeat and energetic track, with gorgeous vocal melodies, trumpet leads and drumming throughout that makes this an engaging listen, as it slows down halfway through the track, making for a spiritual, moody and rather breathtaking listen. The album as a whole is full of excellent melodies, wonderfully textured by percussion, drumming, horn sections and basslines. The vocals throughout bring soul, and the energy as a whole is stunning. It’s a great jazz record and I can’t wait to hear more from this talented band.
