Music: CMPND – Eagle Court

CMPND are a Brighton, UK based hip-hop trio consisting of members Kemastry, Wundrop & Vitamin G. They have released a brand new album titled Eagle Court, and features some dark and eerie production as well as some intricate lyricism from the talented rappers, taking about experiences and making social observations in a visceral, highly engaging manner.

The 16 track album is cohesive and incredibly engaging, with it kicking off with the title track “Eagle Court,” trap-influenced record with dark synths and basslines that capture the aura of the group with a dark, almost hellish sound. This is the common theme of the record as a whole, as the group bring a diverse set of sounds. The infectious “U Know We Fly” features a stellar synth melody and a jittery beat, while “Flight 370” is this dark, hellish drill-inspired track that brings out a brutal energy from the three emcees. The features bring their own unique styles such as Hutch on “Illeagle Court” and Verbz on “Home Runs” and “Paraphrase.” The track that stands out to me is “Hindenberg,” which acts as a cypher featuring Herbicide, Dirty Dike, Fliptrix, Nuphzed & Stinkin Slumrock. It features a hard-hitting boom-bap beat, bringing the same energy of 90s hip-hop bangers. It’s a proper, hard-hitting track that showcases their diversity in sound and ability to bring different styles effortlessly. The album closes with “Dayz To Daze,” another boom-bap beat with an incredibly soulful vocal contribution from Indira May, which ends the album on a reflective and rather beautiful tone. Overall, this album showcases a group that is at the height of their strengths, with a sound that is focused and incredibly introspective.
