Itʻs been nine (WOW) years since E da Boss, one half of Myron and E, aka Eric Boss and Daniel Meisenheimer aka Trailer Limon released that 7-inch “Coming Down/Waiting On You” for the Slept On record label as The Pendletons. It became an instant cult classic with its pitched down, droopy dog Luther Vandross vibes on one side, and the oscillating vapor phase “fonk” on the other. That collector’s item announced to the world these Bay Area musicians not only had a firm grip on what was moving bodies at nights like Sweater Funk and Funkmosphere but how modern soul became the main dig for DJʻs pushing atypical ideas… Both parties have somewhat gone away, Boogie is now winning Grammyʻs.
“Running Away”, the second single from their upcoming debut full-length album recorded in San Francisco, is as driven a track the duo has put together since their start. Taken up by a lockstep alliance between keyboard synths and one-note in front of the other bass line encroachment-Soul Train 80ʻs glitter is the color while squishy keyboard inflections twist in the wind-its a lovely stepper expanding their head-nod soul legacy. Boss, with his smile on the outside vocal delivery, makes you root for the less than optimistic sitch. While not a winning one, he vocalized that mood with class, watching love run out the door.
Guitarist Carl Locket of Shalamar and Rick James fame along with Star Creature recording artist Elive compliments the bandʻs classic soul/boogie sound, making it lived in, not studied.
Over the past couple of years, this project has collaborated with K-Maxx, Jacqueline Mari and Songbird Remos. In 2016, they released the EP “Gotta Get Out” and title track caught the ear of renowned global tastemaker Gilles Peterson, who released it on his Brownswood Bubblers’ compilation. In 2018 the group released the Funk Forever EP on the Bastard Jazz label to critical acclaim.
The Pendletons’ debut full length album 2 Steps Away is out in October via Bastard Jazz Recordings. Stream the track below via Soundcloud and don’t forget to support!
