Georgia Anne Muldrow & Declaime have been releasing legendary music for a few decades now, and their new album Black Love & War continues that amazing streak. The cosmic tones that they’re able to create with their music is beautiful, though the subject matter of being Black in America makes this project a much darker and sadder one.
Still though, the amount of funk and incredible soul that these two geniuses are able to create is just mesmesing. “Where I’m From” is a stunning one, with angelic synths, groovy basslines and a hard-hitting beat giving this track such incredible soul and funk. They celebrate their true home, Los Angeles, with Georgia Anne Muldrow’s stunning vocals and Declaime’s intricate raps and amazing flow being the perfect marriage. Tracks like “That’s How” and “Smile” featuring LaToiya Williams, Aloe Blacc and Ms. Dezy have incredibly futuristic funky production. While Georgia Anne Muldrow has production credits on the majority of the project, Oh No is also present throughout, providing more hip-hop, boom-bap focused production on “Protect Yourself” and “So Pretti,” which add his signature eclectic sonic brilliance. Overall, this album is truly exceptional, and one that is likely to end up on my favourite albums of 2019 list, as it’s a true cosmic experience.
