Philadelphia-based producer Yikes The Zero comes through with a brand new album titled Echo Storm Howling. Having been a fan of his music since his excellent 2017 release Doctor Molotov’s Gallery of Portals, a concept album I rated very highly, so I was really anticipating this release, and yet again he hits a home run with this new album.
Yikes The Zero’s style on this album reminds me of Deltron 3030 for some reason. It’s the dense, futuristic production that features uneasy and off-kilter synths and drum patterns that bring out a tense tone. You could tell from the overall vibe of this album that it’s an introspective and dense listen, so maybe I should give it more time before reviewing it properly, but I love the seamless flow of this album. “We, The Merlocks” starts the album off with howls and distorted synths that is complemented by a menacing verse from the talented musician. “Alchemy” featuring DJ Skipmode continues that dark vibe with an intense, cacophonous beat and another stellar verse. There are quite a few gorgeous instrumental and vocal moments on the album as well, such as on “Mado” with Natasha Morrow. Her angelic vocals beautifully placed over a slow-paced, ethereal beat. The last track, “Razor Opera” features Tajai, Osevere and TC Cole and is the clear stand out for me. All the features kill it with stellar verses over a phenomenal guitar-driven psychedelic beat that just brings so much hectic energy. It’s a phenomenal way to end such a dense and incredibly crafted album
