London-based neo-soul and R&B musician Majja is definitely one to look out for. I first came across this talented artist a couple of days ago through the Bandcamp “Best Soul” list for June 2019. The project written about is titled Concrete Roses EP, and it is a stunning body of work that blew me away upon first listen.
Her slightly raspy, high-pitched vocals are absolutely beautiful over lush, layered and amazing trap-inspired soulful production by sweetestcape. To me, the stand out track is “Black James Dean,” as she sings beautifully over a lush keys and synths, as well as a beautiful soul sample that’s looped throughout. Her stunning vocals on “Concrete Roses” bring such a wild character to the track, which also includes a hard-hitting trap beat and soulful synths. The sample on “Pull Up” is complemented by more colourful synth leads and an energetic, eclectic vocal performance from the talented musician. Lyrically she’s raw and honest, singing “I’m selfish, I put myself first” on “Concrete Roses,” and telling us “trust your intuition” on “Trees.” She’s not afraid to speak her mind, which is something I absolutely admire, and I really hope she’ll release a more ambitious body of work, because she’s got it in her to achieve great things, especially with her unique voice and production.
