Music: TROX – Late 80’s Baby

Portland-based producer TROX comes through with a brand new album titled Late 80’s Baby. Having worked with the likes of 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, YBN Cordae and others, I was interested to hear what he had cooked up for a solo release. The results are fantastic, with old school instrumentals paying homage to the 80’s (hence the title of the project).

The dominant synths on tracks like “Errol Flynn” bring such energy, especially with the funk-heavy beat throughout. The soul samples on “Church Break I: Hallelujah” hit perfectly with the thumping boom-bap beat, as well as the claps and keys throughout. The funky and odd sample on “Champagne Kings” is amazingly funky, and brings out an aura and energy that is prevalent throughout the album. The sound on “Fluid” is familiar due to it being sampled by Madlib previously. The funk-driven vibes and soulful moments on tracks like “Biggs Flip” and “Battlefield” are fun and engaging listens, and more atmospheric tracks like “V.S.O.P” brings a more ambient and chilled out sound that perfectly complements and balances the more upbeat and groovy tunes. TROX impresses with this release and I can’t wait for more releases in the future.
