Detroit house music legend Moodyman is back with a brand new project titled SINNER and it is an immense release. Known for some incredible albums over the years such as his 2004 release Black Mahogani and his self titled 2014 album Moodyman, this new project combines bass-heavy and thumping electronic production and eclectic soulful samples throughout that make it one of the better electronic albums I’ve heard in a while.
Tracks like “I’ll Provide” feature heavy, thick synthesizers that dominate over a deep bassline throughout. It is a perfect way to start an album off. The hard-hitting claps and beats on tracks like “I Think Of Saturday” keep that eclectic, wild energy going, with percussive sounding instrumentation and brilliant vocals that bring so much character to the album. The hip-hop influence on “If I Gave U My Love” feels very Dilla-esque, very Detroit. The piano and jazzy sounds of “Downtown” turns into a funky, beat-heavy jam with soulful, gorgeous keys and soulful vocals throughout. “Deeper Shadow” follows that same vibe, whilst the live rendition of “I Got Werk” is so damn funky. Those guitar leads are incredible, and once again shows the extent of this man’s talents. He’s one of the greatest, if not the greatest house musician of all time, so it’s safe to say that one of Detroit’s finest kills it on this release.
