Los Retros is the artist name for Mauri, a talented 19 year old from Oxnard, California. His musical inspirations are shaped by American and Latin American left-field pop and soft rock groups from the 70s/80s, and his music reflects this. Los Retros is actually an homage to Chilean pop band Los Ángeles Negros. Retrospect EP is his brand new project, and is a great introduction to the talents of this excellent young musician.
“Never Have Enough” starts the project with a soothing, guitar-driven track, with subtle drums and a bassline that provides an infectious groove. The more upbeat “Friends” features more dynamic guitar melodies, with a more animated vocal performance from Los Retros. The psychedelic vibes of the project as a whole, especially on tracks such as “Love Tape” and “Nostalgic Vibrations,” with fuzzy guitar leads and hazy vocals. The slower-paced tracks remind me of something Mac DeMarco would make. The smooth melodic tracks on this project are splendid, as the synths, basslines and guitar leads bring character, making Retrospect EP a joyful, enjoyable listen.
