Music: BudaMunk, Epic & Shinobi – Gates to the East

The Japanese beat and hip-hop scene is among the most inspiring and interesting in the world at the moment. BudaMunk’s production has been praised and hailed by legends in the scene, and his projects have been essential to the sound in Japan. Epic and Shinobi, I’m not to familiar with yet, but this collaborative album Gates to the East is a perfect introduction to their music.

Featuring heavy, boom-bap hip-hop production, BudaMunk really excels on every front, creating memorable sounds that are perpfect for Epic and Shinobi to rhyme over. With synth and key-heavy beats, the three talented musicians are able to create a head-bob heavy vibe. Tracks like “Tokyo City Light” features a darker, bass-heavy beat, with a gritty energy to it, something I felt a times during my trip to Japan earlier this year. “Lessons Unfold” is a hard-hitting, densely produced track with smooth flows and incredible lyricism. “True and Living” features a stellar soul sample and infectious grooves. Overall, this is a heavy, engaging and brilliant hip-hop album with three musicians at the top of their creative powers.
