New Zealand- musician Jordan Rakei has been making waves for years now with his stunning soulful compositions on excellent albums such as 2016’s Cloak and 2017’s Wallflower. Origin is his third full-length album and sees the artist continue creating soulful, interesting tunes that captivate you unlike any other artist making music today.
Over the 11 tracks, Jordan is able to meander between different sounds effortlessly, really showing how much of a versatile musician he is. The drum and groove-heavy “Mind’s Eye” is an example of this, with guitar and synth leads being complemented by high-energy drumming, creating a more dance-oriented sound. Similarly, “Rolling into One” is a disco-inspired record, with Jordan singing playfully over the synth and groove-heavy track. Touching on subjects such as love, self-reflection and personal identity, his soothing, warm vocals are as great as ever, as he complements some of the lavish, smooth instrumentation. “You & Me” is a cool, jazzy soul tune with a quirky melody with stellar percussion and saxophone throughout. “Speak” features incredible lavish string sections that perfectly complement the aura and blissful tone of the track. While to me this album doesn’t create as many memorable moments as with Wallflower and Cloak, Origin is still a profound body of work that brings such an emotive tone throughout.
