Hamburg-based Turkish psychedelic group Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek come through with their brand new debut album titled Kar Yağar. I accidentally found them just by browsing through Bandcamp, and I was completely blown away by their sound. The Bağlama (Turkish lute) can be heard all over this album, with psychedelic guitar sounds and Derya Yıldırım’s gorgeous vocals reverberating through my headphones and speakers beautifully.
The grooves on this project are so dope. With hectic energy throughout, from impeccable drumming and guitar grooves, the album is dynamic and incredibly fun to listen to. “Dom Dom Kurşunu” is one of the highlights, with it’s incredible Bağlama leads and basslines that just carry so much grooves and high energy, especially with Derya’s stunning vocals throughout this track. Moodier, softer and more mellow sounds can be heard on tracks such as “Seni Hala” and “Hekimoğlu”. On the latter track especially, sombre vocals are complemented by slow drums, which remind me of the soundtrack for Alejandro Jodorowsky’s tribal classic film The Holy Mountain. The tempo picks up on “Ey Şahin Bakışlım,” with one of the more upbeat jams on this album. The energy and tone of this whole project is incredible and it reminds me of how much I love Turkish and Persian music.
