Music: Don Leisure – Halal Cool J

Wales-based musician Don Leisure, known for being one half of Darkhouse Family has released an excellent new album titled Halal Cool J. Throughout the 17 track project, the talented musician is able to craft a project filled with musty and groovy instrumentals and Middle Eastern inspired beats.

“Horse Thieves,” for example, sounds like something Omar Khorshid might have composed when he was still actively making music in the 70s. Its acid-rock tone and the incredible guitar grooves makes for an engaging listen. “Gulum” features gorgeous synths and guitar leads that a brilliantly composed and absolutely beautiful. “Street Cats” features an awesome bassline complemented brilliantly by colourful guitar leads and stellar synths throughout. The guitar solo on “Borkek Break” is fantastic, and the breaks and samples throughout this album are something to genuinely marvel at. Don Leisure has released a fantastic record that is dense and diverse in sound. A definite highlight for this year.
