Goosebumps… Literal goosebumps listening GREY Area, the third full length album from supremely talented London-based artist Little Simz. I remember listening to her 2015 debut album A Curious Tale of Trials + Persons back when I was at university, and it was my favourite album in the world for a good two months, listening to nothing else but her introspective and eye-opening experiences on that album. In 2016 she released Stillness In Wonderland, her second studio album. It was a concept album around the story of Alice in Wonderland, and was a project I reviewed over at Music Is My Sanctuary. At the beginning of this month, she blessed us with her third studio album, which is definitely her best to date. Doesn’t even come close.
To start a track with the confidence and menacing attitude on “Offense,” is a sign for everyone to pay attention. The heavy bassline and her aggressive delivery picks up where Stillness in Wonderland left off – with charisma, confidence, pride and a whole lot of a personality. “Boss” features that same aggression and no-bullshit attitude, as the hook screams “STOP FUCKING WITH MY HEART!” “Selfish” and “Wounds” with Chronixx are mo soulful cuts, while my favourite track on the entire project is probably “Venom.” At 2:35, it is the shortest track on the album but brings the most heat. She absolutely spazzes out on this eerie beat. I could go on about how incredible this album is, but the themes, lyrics and goddamn production is fucking incredible. I need more time to digest this one, but I recommend you guys listen and support because it’s worth your time, 100%. With GREY Area, Little Simz establishes herself as the best rapper in the UK, period. Thank you.
