The Mud SE have been hands down my favourite discovery of 2018. The experimental lo-fi hip-hop group from Greenwich, London have released some excellent music this year, namely their EPs SUNGAZER and HOME BY THE AM. They are back with a new EP titled today, before tomorrow, and it’s safe to say they have bagged in their hat-trick of dope releases this year.
Just 4 tracks in length, the group keep it short and sweet with soulful cuts that give you an insight into the minds of young dreamers, hoping to find their true identity the chaotic urban landscape. Bayley’s lyrics are introspective as he speaks on his own experiences growing up, dealing with school, family and identity issues throughout. It is clear that his inspirations come from the likes of Earl Sweatshirt, MIKE and even MF DOOM in his delivery and flow as well as his ability to create an infectiously captivating energy that keeps my attention throughout. Production is handled by Durty Stanley, their main producer, who keeps the tracks soulful and sample-heavy, giving a lighter, optimistic tone to the record.
It’s another great release from the young group, who I predict will have a breakthrough year in 2019. I’d love to see you guys keep this kind of focus and release a full-length album that really displays your talents to the fullest.
