*2018 Album of the Year*
Just when I thought I’d have my albums of the year list ready for 2018, Danish soul-queen Nanna.B comes through with an incredible new album titled Solen, released on Jakarta Records.
Already impressed by the soulful aura she creates through her powerful vocal performances and incredible production on her EP Lapis, Solen sounds more focused in terms of sonic fluidity as well as her songwriting. Produced by some of the most talented and sought after artists in Anderson .Paak (she opened for him for the Scandinavian part of his tour), Astronote, Shafiq Husayn, Iman Omari, Mndsgn, Cohenbeats, C. Palmer and Nanna.B herself, the album sounds rich in texture, sonically layered and beautifully arranged. The subtle string section on “Find U,” is gorgeous, and the synths and heavy beat make it one of the highlights on the record for me. “Beaches” is a groovy, funk-heavy track guided by Mndsgn’s trademark production and Iman Omari’s ethereal tones, with Nanna.B’s soothing and sensual vocals being interpolated beautifully with the instrumental. “Live Love Life” is another highlight for me, with Astronote’s LA-inspired beat, with it’s funk-driven bassline and synths throughout.
From a lyrical perspective, Nanna.B says the following. “I’m going through various experiences and moods that touches upon joy, creativity, depression, inner strength and power, love, separation and courage. Throughout the story i keep returning to myself as the answer to that longing for home…I wanted to make an album that reflected my journey as a human and artist, the growing comfortable in my own skin, the discovery of my own power and strength, which i really found by moving out of my comfort zone in Denmark. Almost like an unfolding of myself.” It really does seem like she’s at home on this record, but doesn’t shy away from pushing herself out of her comfort zone to produce complex, ethereal and spiritual tracks that are complex in structure and composition. An excellent addition to her already impressive discography, and I can only see her blossoming even more in the future. Excited for you!
