Music: ShunGu – Exile Dreams

ShunGu has someone I have been a fan of ever since discovering his All I Do album that came out back in 2014 on Cosmic Compositions. The Belgian has been producing some incredibly soulful and experimental tracks I have heard over the last couple of years, and his new project Exile Dreams is no exception. Released on one of my favourite labels in recent years, Hot Record Societe.

This new record brings heavier funk-laden grooves to the table. Tracks like “Very Peaceful” have dreamy synths and an incredibly funky beat that is mellow in sound and tempo, with a sound that is very retro in comparison to some of his more futuristic experiments. A lot of the tracks here follow the same pattern. With straightforward grooves, the focus lies on ethereal keys throughout the tape that make it a dreamy and intricate listen, as well as subtle sound effects that add to the character of the tape. “Another Mission” and “Repercussion” are examples of this: smooth, moody and gorgeous tracks that sit with the listener as they grow instrumentally over time.

ShunGu’s talents shine through on Exile Dreams, an amazing addition to his already expansive discography. Listen to the album below via Bandcamp, released on Hot Record Societe.
