*Album of the Year*
Oliver Palfreyman is an incredibly talented young musician based in London. He is part of the Sonic Verse collective and has worked with the likes of Ommetis, Maxwell Owin, Rago Foot and Joe Armon-Jones, and is well respected and known in the local beat-scene in London.
On his new project OP01, Oliver comes through with a project that is so much more than a simple beat-tape. His ideas are developed into incredibly dense recordings, featuring textured and well-crafted beats that provide a storyboard for vibe-heavy nights in London. Whether they come from the subtle saxophone notes on “The Bare Minimum,” or the fast-paced 2-step rhythm on “Deadbeat Dub,” this album is both able to be sonically diverse and tonally consistent for it to flow naturally from track to track. Other highlights include “Want It,” which features colourful electronic loops and gorgeous vocal additions by Aisha Zoe, the hypnotic landscape of “Drown It Out,” featuring soothing vocals from Ommetis, as well as the Joe Armon-Jones assisted “I’ve Tried,” who provide beautiful keys for this sombre piece.
This is an album to remember and celebrate for a long time. Oliver has been at the forefront of the London beat-scene for a while now, and with every single project he continues to blossom musically, which is exciting to watch.
