Released on the incredible New Zealand-based label Cosmic Compositions, jitwam.’s new release ज़ितम सिहँ is an incredibly futuristic take on LA style beatmaking, a tribal and eerie tone, which reminds me of some of Gonjasufi’s earlier work, and an ambience which makes it a relaxing and spiritual listen. There are hints of Toro Y Moi and Connan Mockasin type haziness and murky vocals as well, giving it a dreaminess to the overall sound.
Jitwam.’s story is interesting as well. He was born in Assam, Gauhati in Northwest India, and currently lives in Brooklyn, New York. He spent a lot of his time in Australia and New Zealand, later living in monasteries in Thailand, orphanages in South Africa, and even in some washed up apartments in London. Sounds like he has had a fascinating, diverse and somewhat nomadic lifestyle, and that spirit can be felt clearly throughout his music. His influences range from idiosyncratic artist such as Moondog, The Velvet Underground, Yayoi Kusama, RD Burtman, J Dilla, Moodymann, Leon Thomas, Madlib and Asha Bhostle. This is a fantastic new project from an artist I’m discovering for the first time now. I recommend it to anyone who likes dreamy, eerie landscapes which is at core, an experimental beat tape.
